What is an arm lift?

An arm lift (brachioplasty) is a surgical procedure performed to remove sagging skin and excess fat from the upper arm area. Over time, factors such as weight fluctuations, aging, and loss of skin elasticity can lead to noticeable loose skin on the upper arms. An arm lift helps achieve a tighter, more toned and aesthetically pleasing arm contour.

Who is a good candidate for an arm lift?

Ideal candidates for an arm lift include individuals who:

  • Experience sagging skin or looseness in the upper arms
  • Have excess skin after weight loss
  • Have poor skin elasticity due to aging
  • Are in good overall health and have realistic expectations

Those who have sagging caused by pregnancy or significant weight changes can also benefit greatly from the procedure.

How is an arm lift performed?

The surgery is generally performed under general anesthesia. Depending on the degree of sagging:

  • Excess skin from the inner arm area is removed,
  • Liposuction may be used to remove additional fat,
  • Skin is tightened and repositioned to create a smooth contour.

Incisions are placed along the inner arm to remain as discreet as possible. The procedure typically takes 1.5–2 hours.

What is the recovery process like?

Recovery is usually quick. Mild pain, swelling and bruising may occur within the first few days. Patients should:

  • Avoid strenuous activities for 2–3 weeks
  • Use the recommended compression garment
  • Pay close attention to incision care

Most people return to daily activities within 1 week. Full recovery takes 4–6 weeks.

Will there be visible scars after an arm lift?

Some scarring may occur, but incisions are placed on the inner arm and become less noticeable over time. With proper skin care and protection, the scars fade significantly.

Can an arm lift be combined with liposuction?

Yes. When excess fat is present, liposuction can be performed together with an arm lift. This combination enhances contouring and provides a more refined result.

Are the results of an arm lift permanent?

Results can be long-lasting when supported by a healthy lifestyle. However, aging or major weight fluctuations can affect long-term results. Regular exercise and stable weight help maintain the outcome.

What should be considered before the surgery?

  • Smoking should be stopped 2–3 weeks before surgery.
  • Inform the surgeon about medications and medical history.
  • Blood-thinning medications may need to be paused.
  • Realistic expectations are important.
