What is labiaplasty?

Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure that reshapes and reduces the inner vaginal lips (labia minora) when they are excessively large, elongated, or asymmetric. The purpose is to provide a more balanced and aesthetic appearance while improving physical comfort and reducing irritation during daily activities.

When is labiaplasty preferred?

Labiaplasty is commonly performed for the following reasons:

  • Discomfort in tight clothing,
  • Irritation or pulling sensation during sports such as cycling or running,
  • Pain or sensitivity during sexual intercourse,
  • Aesthetic concerns,
  • Post-birth deformities,
  • Noticeable asymmetry between the labia.

How is labiaplasty performed?

The procedure is usually performed under local anesthesia or sedation. The surgeon trims the excess tissue, reshapes the labia, and creates a natural and symmetrical appearance. The choice of technique depends on the patient’s anatomy and expectations. The operation usually takes 30–60 minutes.

What is the recovery process like?

Recovery is typically quick. Swelling, mild pain, and tenderness may occur during the first 3–5 days. Stitches dissolve on their own. Most patients return to daily activities within 3–7 days. Full healing and final results take 4–6 weeks.

Does labiaplasty leave scars?

The labial tissue hides scars extremely well. The incisions remain within natural folds, so scarring is minimal and usually becomes invisible over time.

When can I resume sexual activity?

Sexual intercourse should be avoided for approximately 4–6 weeks. After receiving the doctor’s approval, it is safe to resume sexual activity.

What are the risks of labiaplasty?

Possible risks include:

  • Infection,
  • Bleeding,
  • Delayed wound healing,
  • Asymmetry,
  • Rarely, changes in sensation.

When performed by an experienced surgeon, these risks are minimal.

Are the results permanent?

Yes. Labiaplasty provides long-lasting results. Although childbirth, aging, or weight changes can affect the area over time, most patients maintain the outcome for many years.

What should be considered before labiaplasty?

  • Stopping smoking,
  • Informing your surgeon about medications,
  • Maintaining intimate hygiene,
  • Having realistic expectations.
