What is a back lift surgery?

A back lift surgery is an aesthetic procedure performed to correct sagging, loose skin and excess fat in the back area, especially after significant weight loss. This operation aims to create a smoother, firmer and more sculpted back contour. Back rolls, skin folds and excess tissue can be effectively removed with this procedure.

Who is a good candidate for a back lift?

This procedure is preferred in the following situations:

  • Loose or sagging skin in the back after major weight loss,
  • Back rolls or folds around the mid-back region,
  • Discomfort or difficulty when wearing fitted clothing,
  • Adults experiencing reduced skin elasticity or excess fat accumulation.

Patients with good overall health, stable weight and who avoid smoking generally achieve the best and most long-lasting results.

How is back lift surgery performed?

The procedure is typically performed under general anesthesia. Depending on the location of sagging, incisions may be placed across the mid-back, bra line or upper waist area. Excess skin is removed, stubborn fat deposits may be treated with liposuction, and the remaining tissue is tightened to form a smoother contour. The incisions are placed in areas that can be hidden under clothing.

What is the recovery process like?

During the first 1–2 weeks, mild pain, swelling and tightness are normal. Most patients can return to light daily activities within 10–14 days. Heavy exercise and strenuous activities should be avoided for at least 4–6 weeks. Wearing a compression garment helps reduce swelling and supports proper healing.

Will there be visible scars?

As with all surgical procedures, scarring is inevitable, but the surgeon places incisions in discreet, clothing-covered areas such as the bra line. Scars are initially more noticeable but fade significantly over time.

What are the risks of back lift surgery?

Potential risks include:

  • Bleeding,
  • Infection,
  • Poor scar healing,
  • Seroma (fluid accumulation),
  • Asymmetry or delayed wound healing.

When performed by an experienced surgeon in appropriate conditions, these risks are minimal.

How long do the results last?

The results of a back lift can be long-lasting, especially when the patient maintains a stable weight. However, natural aging, weight changes and lifestyle factors may affect long-term results.

What should I consider before the surgery?

  • Stop smoking at least 3–4 weeks before surgery,
  • Inform your surgeon about any medications or medical conditions,
  • Discuss expectations clearly and realistically,
  • Complete all required medical tests before surgery.
