What is vaginoplasty (vaginal tightening)?

Vaginoplasty is a surgical procedure designed to correct vaginal looseness and widening caused by childbirth, aging, weight fluctuations, or genetic factors. During the operation, the vaginal muscles are tightened, excess tissue is removed, and the vaginal canal is restored to a firmer and more functional structure. The goal is to achieve both functional and aesthetic improvement.

When is vaginoplasty preferred?

Vaginoplasty is commonly preferred in cases such as:

  • Significant loosening and widening after vaginal childbirth,
  • Reduced sensation or lack of satisfaction during intercourse,
  • Vaginal air trapping (“vaginal gas” sounds),
  • Discomfort while using tampons or pads,
  • Cosmetic concerns that affect self-confidence.

These issues can negatively impact both sexual life and daily comfort, and vaginoplasty can effectively resolve them.

How is vaginoplasty performed?

The procedure is usually performed under general anesthesia or sedation with local anesthesia. The loosened muscles of the posterior vaginal wall are tightened, excess mucosa is removed, and tissues are reconstructed. This narrows the vaginal canal and increases muscle tone. The operation typically takes 45–90 minutes.

What is the recovery process like?

Recovery varies by patient, but generally:

  • Mild pain, swelling, and sensitivity may occur in the first few days,
  • Most patients can return to light daily activities within 3–7 days,
  • Sitting and walking may feel sensitive during the first week,
  • Sutures dissolve on their own and do not require removal.

Complete healing and full tissue recovery may take 4–6 weeks.

When can sexual intercourse be resumed?

Most patients should wait 4–6 weeks before resuming sexual intercourse to allow proper healing of the tissues. The exact duration may vary depending on individual healing and the surgeon’s recommendations.

Does vaginoplasty leave scars?

The vaginal mucosa heals exceptionally well, so scars are usually minimal and invisible from the outside. Incisions are placed inside the vaginal canal, making them virtually unnoticeable once healed.

How does vaginoplasty affect sexual pleasure?

Vaginal looseness may reduce sensation for both partners. By tightening the vaginal canal, vaginoplasty can improve sexual pleasure and satisfaction. However, results may vary depending on anatomy and expectations. Open communication with your surgeon before the procedure is important.

Post-operative care instructions

  • Avoid sexual intercourse for the recommended period,
  • Avoid heavy lifting and strenuous exercise during the first weeks,
  • Keep the area clean and dry,
  • Use pads instead of tampons until healing is complete,
  • Avoid smoking as it delays healing.

What are the risks of vaginoplasty?

Possible risks include:

  • Infection,
  • Bleeding or hematoma,
  • Wound healing problems,
  • Rarely, excessive tightening or asymmetry,
  • Temporary or rarely permanent sensitivity changes.

These risks are minimized when the procedure is performed by an experienced surgeon.

Are the results permanent?

Vaginoplasty results are long-lasting. However, aging, weight fluctuations, childbirth, and hormonal changes may affect the tissue over time. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle helps preserve results longer.
